San Francisco’s Chinatown Coloring Book Wins International Award
Culture to Color’s latest project is helping to revive tourism in the heart of San Francisco following the COVID-19 crisis. Now the project has won a Next Generation Indie Book Award.

Washington, D.C. – July 13, 2022 – A coloring book published by Culture to Color highlighting the vivid history and iconic locations of San Francisco’s Chinatown was honored at the Next Generation Indie Book Awards at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. on Friday, June 24.

The book was awarded as the top activity book for all ages, the latest in a series of honors garnered by the project since its release in January 2022.

“Thank you to the Indie Book Awards for this great honor,” said Culture to Color’s Founder and CEO, Bibi LeBlanc. “We at Culture to Color were privileged to work closely with a wonderful group of people in San Francisco to showcase the culture and history of this beautiful community.

“We are thrilled to know that our work is helping Chinatown, and that the judges recognized its value to readers everywhere,” said LeBlanc.

In March, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors awarded Culture to Color with an official commendation for its work on the Chinatown book, which was released shortly before the city’s 2022 Lunar New Year festivities.

“From fortune cookie factories to the Dragon Gate on Grant Avenue to the Follies and seniors doing tai chi at Portsmouth Square—each page really captures the spirit of San Francisco’s Chinatown,” said Supervisor Aaron Peskin during the March 1 meeting.

Reviewers have called the book “a fantastic resource” and “a terrific way to get to know generally about Chinese culture and traditions and specifically about San Francisco’s Chinatown.”

The book was developed as an outreach vehicle to help stimulate new tourism to San Francisco’s Chinatown following the two difficult years of the COVID-19 crisis. Culture to Color and the Robert Joseph Louie Memorial Fund began collaborating on the project before the pandemic, which interrupted the creative process.

Among the pandemic’s unforeseen results was a surge in anti-Chinese prejudice, and LeBlanc said she was “all in” on the idea of engaging readers with the rich cultural history of one of the oldest and most storied Chinatown districts in the U.S.

“Chinatown is more than just another tourist destination,” wrote Angelo Racelis, Museum Operations & Visitor Services Coordinator for the Chinese Historical Society of America. “Bibi’s coloring book and cultural guide captures not just the vibrancy of its many sights, lively sounds, and significant history; but also gives you a glimpse of what life is like for those who call it home.”
