Where to Pursue Online Education During Quarantine

July 23
00:05 2020

July 22, 2020 – There are about 2.9 billion people under quarantine to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus. The coronavirus pandemic has changed how everyone learns, and with school reopening plans remain a debate, many students are experimenting with some combination of online school and in-person learning to take place come fall.

Luckily, there are many great online education classes for anyone time invested available offered by both accredited institutions and long-run and beloved learning companies such as Khan Academy and IBM.

Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of the online learning platform Coursera, said “online learning, with an ability to work remotely, I think, is a tremendous opportunity to provide, not only learning but also job opportunities to a much broader class of people.” Coursera puts college and other lectures online for remote learning. It’s based in Palo Alto, California, and has pulled in tens of millions of new customers this year. – source.

Khan Academy

The Khan Academy Kids app is totally free. The videos help kids learn how to write their letters, do some basic math, boost social and emotional development, and they’re beautifully designed, with bright colors, and fun characters that make the lessons a little more fun. Unlike the regular Khan Academy channel, which provides lessons in chemistry, civics and advanced math, Khan Academy Kids is available on the iPad or iPhone only — which also means that parents don’t have to worry about their kids browsing YouTube unattended.

Codecademy

At Codecademy, you can learn to code without having to pay anything. They have courses available covering a range of languages, including Java, JavaScript, Python, R, Go, Swift, and more.

It’s important to note that some of the more advanced courses are behind a paywall. However, the cost is competitive, so that shouldn’t be a deterrent.

Coursera

Coursera partners with hundreds of top-tier universities and companies to bring you the best of the best in online learning. Stream-on-demand lectures and lessons led by esteemed professors and industry leaders and even earn a professional certificate or academic degree in your chosen field.

Udemy

Another choice for those seeking some university level, top of the line, courses, and instruction from home is Udemy. Categories are many and wide-ranging, and courses can be either free or paid, with many affordable class options. Get trained in animal nutrition or web development. Take a stress and anxiety-busting course for yourself—or get a mental health counseling diploma to help others.

While online learning can happen at home, it can also happen at school, or really, anywhere. Schools that have constraints on space can explore partnerships with other places in the community for students to learn.

For example, many colleges of education and tutoring platforms have students only after school. While they need to be staffed by someone licensed to work with students, this does not need to be a teacher as the students already have a teacher, you just need the space. Businesses can also think creatively for ways to provide online education for staff who need it. When students are learning online, you can teach as if there are no walls, because there aren’t! The digital age is here to disrupt the old educational format.
